Every time I think of imagination, I see (imagination, go figure) SpongeBob throw his arms wide with a rainbow between his hands: “IMAGINATION!”
All the usual lines people repeat about imagination
- “Imagine that.”
- “Can you only imagine?”
- “Close your eyes and imagine.”
But, don’t let that imagination step outside the box. Don’t go where society doesn’t want you to go.
Imagination should never be restricted. It should always be free to go where ever. I am not talking about going to some sick corner where people are hurt. All though, in our anger. And I don’t care who you are. We have all been thee and done that.
So, lets see what the defination really is for imagination. Get ready for a dry, totally colorous deifnation that doesn’t even come close to how beautiful imagination can be.
“the faculty or action of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses.”
That definition is what ‘approved imagination’ looks like. Neat, tidy, polite… and useless. Mine doesn’t fit in that box.
Every great idea or thought has come from people that did not restrict their imagination. Everything from simple inventions to going to the moon.
Is fantasy just another word for imagination? Maybe. But in my head, fantasy is imagination when it gets a little reckless.
Imagination says, “I can see it.”
Fantasy says, “Yeah… and I want it.”
Same cabin. Same fireplace. Same snow falling outside. The difference is whether I’m just picturing it… or whether I’m mentally packing my bags and trying to live in it.
Chuckle, I stayed in the box on this one. I didn’t go to the dark, kinky, sexual side of fantasy.
I deserve at least one gold star for restraint. Or, better yet… anyone want to come play with me and my imagination/fantasies?
A lot of people get so wrapped up in what today’s society says is “acceptable” and “unacceptable” that they stop thinking for themselves.
And no, I’m not just talking about sexual fantasies.
If you can imagine that “visitors” might actually be real, suddenly you’re a tin foil hatter.
If you can imagine doing something a different way, the response is: “Yeah… but that’s not how it’s done.”
If you fantasize about trying something new with your partner, you keep your mouth shut because you’re afraid you’ll offend them, or worse, lose them.
That’s the box.
Stop being afraid to step outside it.
- “The box isn’t safety. It’s permission. And I’m done asking.”
- “Most people don’t have a lack of imagination. They have a fear of consequences.”
I personally believe the world would be a whole lot better if people would relax, step out of the group-think for a minute, and drift off into their own imagination more often. If you’re a reader like I am, you’re living inside someone else’s imagination, the author’s. Same thing with movies and TV stories. You’re living through somebody else’s mind.
Well… stop the shit. Let your imagination loose. You might be surprised how much better you feel, and what you discover about yourself that you never knew was there. It takes time to let your imagination wander without restraints, without immediately yanking it back onto a leash. But trust me, it’s worth the effort.
Oh, and by the way: yes, I have a vivid imagination, and I don’t keep it locked in a box. And I can provide witnesses to that.
One of the things I’ve found out about my imagination: I’ve tried to make real certain things I’ve imagined. Everything from sexual fantasies to my writing here. I don’t restrict myself anymore.
At times, this has turned into projects. Into work. Developing new Windows applications where I looked at the accepted options and went, “Nope, I can do better.” Or just: “I’ve got all these thoughts in my head, and I need to share them.”
I still like to put the tin foil hat on sometimes. I still like to drift into the imagination of others when I read. But I also give my imagination what it deserves: room to wander wherever it wants to go.
And like I said earlier, I do feel better for stepping outside the box. People don’t like it? Oh well. Rotate on that stick you have buried in your dark side.
