I had all kinds of plans to write a serious article about open-source and proprietary software. It\u2019s half-started, sitting there waiting for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But honestly? I just don\u2019t feel like doing it right now. Too much serious shit gets old. So I decided to follow the same advice I use when I\u2019m coding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If in doubt, throw it out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

No, I\u2019m not throwing out the open-source article. I do<\/em> want to write it. Just\u2026 not today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today is for something simpler: coffee, tea, and me. Lifelong Coffee Person<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lifelong Coffee Person<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

People who know me personally know I\u2019ve always been a coffee drinker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I worked my whole life in IT, in offices where the coffee was free. I can drink coffee from the moment I get up till the time I go to bed and still sleep just fine. I just have to make a few extra trips to the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I\u2019m a true believer that if you\u2019re going to drink coffee, you should drink it the way it was meant to be drunk: black<\/strong>. Taste the flavor of the bean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christ, what the hell are you drinking coffee for<\/em> if you\u2019re going to cover the taste with cream and sugar? The caffeine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you just want caffeine, there are a million ways to get it that don\u2019t involve murdering a good cup of coffee. Drink soda if you want sugar. At least then you\u2019re actually tasting what you\u2019re buying, instead of masking your coffee with a bunch of junk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WTF, people?<\/strong> Why drink coffee if you\u2019re going to hide the taste?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starbucks, a Brief Roast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And let\u2019s not get into the high-priced flavored bullshit you get at yuppie-land Starbucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overpriced, and honestly? It doesn\u2019t taste that good. Every time I\u2019ve had their black coffee, it tasted like someone left the pot on all day until it burned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorry. It sucked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Coffee Stopped Loving Me Back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because I drink coffee black and it\u2019s so acidic, getting older finally caught up with me. It started bothering my stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I never get the \u201ccaffeine headache\u201d some people do when they stop drinking coffee, but I did notice something: I wasn\u2019t enjoying<\/em> it anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you don\u2019t enjoy something, there\u2019s no reason to keep doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter: Tea (Against All Odds)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recently I wasn\u2019t feeling well and my landlady made me lemon-ginger tea to settle my stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had never<\/em> been a hot tea person before that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I actually liked it. No caffeine, but I really liked the taste. So I started buying tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First tea I bought was green tea. I used to like the \u201cgreen tea\u201d shot, so I thought the tea would taste like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green tea sucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I moved on to black tea. Now black tea<\/strong> I like. I tried Earl Grey\u2014really good. Then I tried black tea from an Indian company, and I liked that even more. I like the flavor, I like the aroma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I especially liked the Indian black tea when I found a deal: 216 bags for 18 bucks. That\u2019s when I discovered what I now call my rocket fuel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rocket Fuel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rocket fuel = three tea bags in a 20-ounce mug<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust me on this. You want a jolt of caffeine? Multiple tea bags. Go there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I actually find I get more of a caffeine kick from strong tea than from coffee. Plus, I can just nuke water in the microwave for four or five minutes instead of making a whole pot of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And no, I never liked instant coffee. Again: not the true flavor. Not even close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Whole New Rabbit Hole<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What I\u2019m finding is that there are so many<\/em> different kinds of tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black tea alone has a bunch of different flavors. I have no clue yet which teas have the best jolt, which are caffeine-free, or what all the fancy names mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a learning experience for me\u2014but it\u2019s one I\u2019m actually enjoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will I Ever Give Up Coffee?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s how I look at it now: my tea travel mug is<\/em> my coffee travel mug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True coffee drinkers never really \u201cclean\u201d their mugs. They rinse them, sure. But coffee mugs are like cast-iron skillets: they get seasoned. They hang on to the flavors of past cups, just like skillets hang on to flavors of past meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So now my tea has a little hint of past coffee in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
