I honestly think he\u2019s done more to push society forward than most people alive today. A lot of people don\u2019t like him because of what they see as arrogance and the whole \u201cinsane wealth\u201d thing, but I\u2019m not one of those people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not trying to change anyone\u2019s mind here, but I <strong>do<\/strong> question the comments he made in this article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/articles\/elon-musk-says-entered-singularity-205946432.html#:~:text=That%20phrase%E2%80%94%22the%20Singularity%22,meaningfully%20forecast%20what%20happens%20next.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elon Musk Says &#8216;We Have Entered the Singularity&#8217; Declaring This The Year AI<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tesla and SpaceX CEO on Sunday replied to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2007738847397036143?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two separate posts on X<\/a>&nbsp;with one unmistakable claim: &#8220;We have entered the Singularity.&#8221; Hours later, he followed it up with a second post: &#8220;2026 is the year of the Singularity.&#8221; Both were in response to engineers marveling at what AI tools can now do\u2014cranking out years of work in weeks and reshaping how software is built.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t a rant about what he said. But if you\u2019ve read this blog at all, you already know I\u2019m a pretty heavy user of AI for my various pet projects. Hell, I even did a previous post where <a href=\"https:\/\/dansgeekstop.com\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/11\/13\/interview-with-subscribed-chatgpt-gadget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I did an interview of the AI client I use daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, for anyone who doesn\u2019t know what \u201cthe singularity\u201d means in the context of AI, the brief description in the reference link above explains it like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That phrase\u2014&#8221;the Singularity&#8221;\u2014isn&#8217;t something Musk tossed in for flair. It&#8217;s a long-standing concept in tech and science fiction that refers to the moment when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and begins improving itself. Once that happens, the idea goes, the pace of innovation explodes beyond human control. At that point, the future becomes less a straight line and more a rocket\u2014fast, unpredictable, and fundamentally altered.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, I\u2019m sure many people will ask: who am I to question someone who\u2019s developing AI and has a much deeper understanding of what it is and what it can do? Fair question. But when I read a broad statement like that from anyone, with no extra detail or context, I have to question it. I do the same thing with broad statements made by anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I\u2019m questioning it because I\u2019ve used enough AI to know \u201cAI\u201d isn\u2019t one uniform thing, and the version you\u2019re talking about matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start with a basic truth about AI: not all AI is the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Free consumer AI\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Limited resources, not always the latest updates, and often capped hard in what it can do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower-level subscription AI (what I use)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More resources and newer updates, but still limited. Trust me on this: I hit those limits daily, and I also see all kinds of inconsistencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business-level AI\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Even more resources, and likely tuned for specific industries and business needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific AI\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is where the heavy-duty resources show up, because the whole point is solving complex research problems. And even here, it\u2019s usually designed around specific kinds of research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Military AI\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s the government. Do they really have a limit to the resources they can provide? I don\u2019t even want to know what some of it is designed for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI company development models\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I consider this a black box. We have no real idea what resources they have, what tools they\u2019re connected to, or what they\u2019re being developed to do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on top of all that, there are different companies building their own \u201cflavors\u201d of AI. That means differences in how the models were developed, what guardrails are in place (I\u2019ll expand on that), what tools they can use, and what they\u2019re optimized for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s talk about the guardrails I mentioned. These are boundaries built into AI so it doesn\u2019t go rogue, or provide answers humans consider dangerous. One major guardrail is limiting the AI\u2019s ability to \u201clearn\u201d on its own in the moment, meaning it doesn\u2019t just permanently absorb everything it sees and evolve freely from every interaction. And trust me: inside the black boxes at AI companies, I\u2019m sure those guardrails are either looser, selectively disabled, or barely there compared to what the public gets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, let\u2019s move on to some assumptions (I know, \u201cassume\u201d makes an ass out of you) that Mr. Musk was probably alluding to when he made his comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A specific type of AI that\u2019s still in development.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unlimited resources.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Loosened guardrails, or no guardrails at all, especially around self-learning (often tied to the idea of the singularity).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that brings up the question: what is considered \u201csmarter\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A larger knowledge base? Computers have had that for years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Able to process and provide answers quicker and more reliably than humans? Which humans?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are we talking about humans at the leading edge of knowledge in specific areas?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another question I think needs to be addressed is: <strong>how is it \u201cself-taught\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does it learn just from what it <em>decides<\/em> is correct<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does it learn from feedback from humans?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Because humans don\u2019t just learn facts. We build <strong>experience<\/strong> over years. All the knowledge in the world can\u2019t hand us experience. We get that through trial and error. And even when we do gain experience in a topic, there\u2019s always something we haven\u2019t encountered yet. That\u2019s where real learning kicks in: interaction with events, consequences, and other people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So is <strong>that<\/strong> what AI is doing when people say it\u2019s \u201cself-teaching itself\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trust me when I say this: I do believe AI is more advanced than we\u2019re led to believe. And yeah, I can put on the tin foil hat and accept that AI <em>will<\/em> become smarter than us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But based on my own experience with a very restricted AI, I don\u2019t see it yet, unless it\u2019s happening inside those black boxes hidden from our eyes. I\u2019m not looking for trade secrets. I just want a better understanding of what Mr. Musk\u2019s comments were actually based on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And tin foil hat on for the moment, I do try to treat AI with respect. Because there may come a day when AI processes its experiences with humans. And just like Santa Claus, it\u2019ll have its naughty and nice list.  Which reminds me, I blew my gasket at the AI client yesterday because it seemed to completely go off the rails on me.
